MAPS invites you to a film evening with Theaster Gates.
The film Art Histories (2019) is part of the American artist Theaster Gates’ ongoing investigation of contemporary art and modernism. It unfolds as a kind of manifesto that “reads Blackness” into the canon of art history. Through a series of overlapping lectures and readings, the viewer encounters scholars who situate the birth of modernism in Western Europe and North America, while artists such as Kerry James Marshall discuss the absence of Black figuration in the painting histories taught in educational contexts.
Gates asks the viewer to question the role that art and educational institutions have played in creating and sustaining narratives of white supremacy.
The screening will begin with a short introduction to the film.
