MAPS Movie Mingle: Cao Fei

MAPS Movie Mingle is a vibrant film experience where we explore visual culture through everything from art films and video art to documentaries and more commercial works. The programme brings together films across genres and formats, creating an informal space where you can experience both classics and new perspectives. Enjoy a glass of wine, have some popcorn, and watch a great film, introduced by one of our hosts, who will provide an introduction to the evening’s screening.

Friday 4 September MAPS Movie Mingle features Nova (2019) by Cao Fei, on loan from the collection of ARoS Aarhus Art Museum.

Cao Fei (b. 1978, China) explores the social and cultural transformations of contemporary China through film, photography, installation, and digital media. Combining documentary observation with imagined narratives, her works examine the intersections of technology, urbanization, and everyday life.

In Nova (2019), Cao Fei follows a family living in a future lunar settlement while reflecting on memory, migration, and the enduring desire for home. Set against a technologically advanced yet familiar world, the work considers how visions of the future continue to be shaped by relationships and lived experience.
