MAPS Movie Mingle: Theaster Gates

17.04.2026 18:00 – 19:00

MAPS Movie Mingle is a vibrant film experience where we explore visual culture through everything from art films and video art to documentaries and more commercial works. The programme brings together films across genres and formats, creating an informal space where you can experience both classics and new perspectives. Enjoy a glass of wine, have some popcorn, and watch a great film, introduced by one of our hosts, who will provide an introduction to the evening’s screening.

On Friday, 17 April, we are screening Art Histories (2019) by Theaster Gates.

Art Histories (2019) is part of American artist Theaster Gates’ ongoing exploration of contemporary art and modernism. The film unfolds as a kind of manifesto that “reads Blackness” into the art historical canon. Through a series of overlapping lectures and readings, the viewer encounters scholars who centre the birth of modernism in Western Europe and North America, while artists such as Kerry James Marshall discuss the absence of Black figuration in the painting histories commonly taught in education.

Gates invites the viewer to question the role that art and educational institutions have played in creating and maintaining narratives of white supremacy.

We look forward to welcoming you.
