From the infinite darkness of the universe to art in the midst of everyday life. On Friday 11 September, MAPS opens a new season with two new exhibitions, a presentation of the year ahead, a student exhibition, a concert, film and food.
A new season begins at MAPS, and we are celebrating both at the museum and out in the city.
Director Malene Natascha Ratcliffe will present MAPS’ upcoming programme, artists, projects and initiatives, which over the coming year will bring art closer to people in Køge and across Denmark.
At the same time, we are opening two new exhibitions that each explore, in different ways, how art comes into being, moves through the world and becomes part of our shared spaces.
Step into a black hole
On the square in front of Køge Station, you can experience Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm’s A Black Hole Calling Us, a large-scale interactive installation that takes you on a journey towards and into a black hole.
Step between the work’s eight screens and stand at its centre. Here, your own body becomes part of the work as images and sound surround you, creating the sensation of moving into another dimension.
Situated at the intersection of art, technology and science, the work brings something that normally exists millions of light-years away into everyday life on the square outside Køge Station.
A Black Hole Calling Us can be experienced from 11 September for one month, daily between 3 pm and 9 pm.
The art work is supported by Ny Carlsberg Foundation and the Danish Arts Foundation.

What is a 17-metre-long ship doing here?
The next generation kicks off the day
As tradition has it, we begin the day by making space for the next generation with the opening of a student exhibition featuring works created through MAPS’ learning programmes.
Taking inspiration from the practice of Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica, the students have worked with colour, costumes, dance, performance, drawing and collage, exploring what happens when art is not simply something you look at, but something you step into yourself.
Season Opening
Following the official season opening and Malene Natascha Ratcliffe’s presentation of the programme for the year ahead, we will walk together to the square outside Køge Station, where Cecilie Waagner Falkenstrøm will introduce A Black Hole Calling Us.
Back at MAPS, the evening continues with a concert by Emil F and Frederik Valentin, Movie Mingle featuring Howl’s Moving Castle, and food and drinks.
